Well, I've tried it both ways... first, with the battle animations and recently, with the battle character sets.
I do agree that the battle animations allow me to have smoother animations, but the problem came whenever I created some of my special attacks. For example, if I had Fire suit Mario using a fireball attack, his foot would overlap the graphics for Luigi (who is standing beside him).
It seems as if I would have to drastically space them out on the battlefield (to prevent overlapping), or simply to switch over to the battle character sets. Using the latter does limit my animations a bit, but it prevents the overlapping problem and I don't have to divide up the party so drastically on the battlefield.
At the moment, I'm dividing it half-and-half. Most of the animations (idle, bad statuses, etc), I'm using the battle character sets. The other things (some victory poses, my attacks, the dizzy condition), I'm using battle animations instead.
EDIT: I'm still working with my animations, party layout, etc. If I can space them out properly without too many gaps between them, I'll switch back entirely to the battle animations instead of character sets. I'll post an update later on in regards to this.
I may also recolor the Frozen condition color palette, as suggested, to make it a lighter blue.
