It may be harder to do, but it forces you to use expressions and gestures which are better.

If you really need a talking character that's in the party all the time (assuming Bowser isn't), make it one that doesn't fight like Chippy.

I say silent, but I don't know how good you are at expressions and stuff. If you're good at them, then silent might be better.

Use a fan character of the questionable material.

i must say cdivision, that my bro and i are good with editing as you may have seen with the goomba sprites, so that wouldn't be a problem. also, i have been ripping some luigi sprites if i need them.

Well, it's not just the sprites. It's using them to make a good cutscene. Most fan games tend to fail at this.

You can't just make text pop-up and close and pop-up and close. Characters have to move, react, face each other, face the audience and all that jazz.

yeah i have that in my mind, just made a cutscene where toadbert is ashamed by everyone, gotta make him turn his face red, lol. and yes, u division, i have seen that many have failed into this but not me, and it's not like i have not seen mario & luigi cutscenes.
