Pretty much every member who's making a game on these forums is making a fan game, so I figured we might as well talk about why. Give your reasoning for making a fan game as opposed to making an original title.

If you're making an original title as well, explain pros and cons of doing so compared to your fan game.

I find a fangame with premade characters and locations easier to deal with, because you can spend less time thinking about who when and where and think more about what the game will be about, but making an original game gives you more freedom to think of concepts even if it's harder and takes more time.

Also, I've wanted to make a Mario game for years before I found out about Rpg Maker!

Both of those guys seemed to have failed, but I guess the legacy lives on in you. And from what I've played,you have a chance at this...

With a fan game so many elements are already there and don't need explanation. Like Mario to Bowser to Peach jokes already have their background context. Things like that. Also you get to use really pretty sprites and styles that would otherwise be strange.

to be honest? i have no idea why i'm making a fangame.

There's gotta be something pushing you to make Mario games instead of your own creations. Maybe at this point, it's just easier or the natural thing to do?

well i enjoy making fan games, especially fan games. it makes me challenge to make some of its features and add some new, i want to feel that i am making an official mario game and i like people to have fun. i also like to make fan games because i don't have to break my head too much in fan games, but making some little tweaky originally things is also good for a fan game, otherwise it will have same enemies, characters, etc. fan games are also good for polishng your skills for when you decide to make an original one.

i dont really know why i making one after im done with my fangame il make one that isnt a fangame maybe i use sprites from other games but too not make a fangame of it

I'm making a fan game because I've been writing fanfiction longer than I've written original fiction so I'm more used to coming up with stories for it. Plus I decided I wanted to make a Chaotix-centric RPG after I finished playing Chaotix of Tomorrow (an old old Sonic RPG made using 2000 all the way back in 2005/2006) and decided to see if I could do better. Also, focusing on characters other than Sonic as the main means people won't be expecting me to make some stupid action stages since apparently people want Sonic to be fast no matter what genre of game he's in. >>; No offense to those who are doing just that in their games. I just don't want to.
