Megaman Xcitement wasn't one of the first ideas I ever thought of but it was the first idea I ever put the most work into in areas outside the basic plot. I made screenshots in photoshop, drew out maps, edited some sprites, and plan on making this a true fan game one day.

The biggest problem is, I don't have the knowledge to make it at the moment. I'm unsure of any textbooks available for programs like Game Maker and Multimedia Fusion. I tried using Power Game Factory for my Macintosh but to no avail. I was told that most fangames are made using engines but I have no idea how to access them. I was hoping someone would be willing to give me some pointers and lessons on making a game and which program to use. It would be greatly appreciated.

In the meantime, here's the idea as it is...

Story
It has been three years since the destruction of Sigma. Now absent from the world, X and Zero are doing the best to rebuild the world he has damaged for so long. Fellow comrade, Axl has been sent on a rescue mission by officer Zell. Reports state that Axl has not returned from the mission for the past four weeks. X and Zero head to the Alpha Base for answers though they are unaware that they are being followed by followers of Sigma. Even after Sigma's death there are still those who wish to follow the path he took. X and Zero head to the Alpha Base to find Surge, a reploid who stores files for the Repliforce. Surge confesses that the file on the Axl Report has been stolen by a woman by the name of Dynase. Before Surge can leak more information enemy ships fly in and begin to attack the Alpha Base. X and Zero must flee the base if they wish to continue their search.

Looks like a really good concept for a game,
but I am not sure which you should use.

You have to look/tinker/discover with different
engines, and, when you got one, try to practice
with it so you get familiarized with the program.

Thanks for the advice! Do you know which would be the cheapest program to purchase. Also sorry if this is in the wrong section. I read in the description something along the lines of 'Game Ideas'

Well, on one hand this may be too advanced for your first project. I don't know much about Game Maker, but that seems like the program you should look into. I'm pretty sure there is a free or trial version of the older one you can play around with.

Now is Game Maker for Mac or PC. I have both but I use Mac more frequently. I haven't been as up to date with this program as say...RPG Maker
