CRITICISM: THE KEY OF IPROVEMENT

The critcism on the forums was a bit dull from the start I have to admit, but
now that new random-people who think "Nice" or "Way to go!" are critic
enough to show that what they're looking at is good. But to people like me,
it always make them a bit bothered because they don't answer to the basic
Critic Criteria:

Why?

Why is it nice? Why is it looks like the best game game you have ever played?

How?

Think about what makes something nice and how does it makes it nice.

How can it be improved?

No game/art/etc. is perfect, so there's alway a way to improve it. To an extent, though.

Here some examples of criticism of a game(courtesy of HBGames):

Descriptive(good) criticism:

Quote:
I haven't played it enough yet to give you a full runthrough of my experience, but I just thought I'd pop in and let you know that the pop-up messages are really unnecessary and annoying to click through. if you want to show a large amount of text onscreen, saving the text as a picture and using Show Picture ingame would be much more efficient than knocking the player out of his immersion and forcing him to click through a lot of little popup windows

and I agree that Japanese text really doesn't have a point in your logo. you said "it adds to the logo," but that's simply not true. getting rid of it'd probably improve the logo overall, if I think about it.

as a final note, it's kind of weird to have a cloud fog scrolling over another cloud fog (as in the title screen.) you might want to rethink it.

I'll come back later once I've actually played a decent chunk of the alpha

Dull(bad) criticism:

Quote:
Looks good. You are really good.

Other points in criticims:

When making critcisim, you don't need to act like a jerk, that means, to say what's bad in a very agressive way.
If you are making critics, if there's something wrong, point what's bad and try to explain him why and how he can improve.
Don't act like this:

Quote:
You are making it all wrong!
You don't know how to make RPG's!
The graphics look horrible.
Look for another hobbie.

Instead, act like this:

Quote:
Okay, I see you're starting with this, and I have to point out some mistakes:
The mapping looks square. Try to look at landscapes and see if they're square.
Also. You should shade your sprites. Imagine there's a lightbulb above the player and
try to see the shadows and stuff.

If you see something looks bad, and you don't know why, don't bother to
post. You'll end up looking dumb.

Don't compliment the author too much. He's looking for people to critic his
work, not him/her/it.

Being a good critic won't only help you, but it'll also help who you are making a critic of.

It's only logical this to be sticky it might make it possible for critics worth spending time on reading
